SURPRISES

Last saturday we played in Peer w/ Eamon Mc Grath and it was kind of surreal. That evening, our drummer and his wife became proud parents of GYS. So we called Joris (Rosa Parks Private Busseat). Without rehearsals and not knowing the songs, he did a pretty good job behind the drums! Thank you Joris, Roel, Sven, Tim and Gunter for the hard work and magic. And last but not least: congratulations to An and Ben and little Gys! Life is full of surprises.

BELIEVO IN OOR

De naakte dames op een fiets lijken weggereden uit de clip Bicycle Race van Queen, maar dat blijkt een afleidingsmanoevre. Het trio Believo! uit Weelde (net over de Belgische grens) vormt een heerlijk herriebandje met durf, goede vondsten, knappe zanglijnen en behoorlijk noisy, licht overstuurde gitaarmuurtjes. Shoegaze meets hardcore meets indiepop, alsof Hüsker Dü met At The Drive-In, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Flaming Lips en Stone Roses samen in een garage hebben gehuurd om liedjes te bedenken. Die denderen soms lekker voort als een stoomtrein op een zonnig traject zonder tegenwind, die laten ook een paar opvallende breaks en dynamische stukken horen, plus iets wat voor deze band als een ballad door zou kunnen gaan.

A highly enjoyable slab of screaming (well, high pitched) thrash pop, this record. Very much in love with the whole No Age post-rock thang, Believo’s splendid opener Teenage Stuff hangs around just long enough to justify the songs title. Truly the sound of squeezing spots. Blind is similarly high-octane with high pitched shouting and a wall of angry guitars fighting for your attention. Be warned, the template is pretty much set from hereon in with impassioned, sound-filled songs like Title Ran Away and competing for whatever air is left in the room. Swordfight and Intuition do offer a smidgeon of relief with their doomy bass lines, crystalline guitar runs and (overall) more considered approach to what constitutes an alternative guitar based pop song using electronically amplified equipment. As such they are very effective tracks, the band does boast some good songs, let it be said. Little kisses is a great track too, with a melodic, breathless rush of guitars announcing its arrival. Keep on Laughing and One Moment remind us of the opening rush whilst Yourself has maudlin, passive/aggressive teenage feelings to spare.
Overall, it’s big, heart-on-sleeve stuff, and definitely one to jump around to.

Great review from File Under, a Dutch zine

Zo zeg, wat hebben we hier ineens? Volkomen uit het niets verschijnt er een gitaarplaat van jewelste van een mij tot voor kort onbekende band. Believo is de naam van het Belgische trio die deze debuutplaat op de mensheid loslaat via het bescheiden Zeal-label. In iets minder dan drie kwartier laat deze band horen waar ze goed in zijn, namelijk gitaarrock met een flinke dosis posthardcore erin, wat zich vooral uit in de heerlijk hoge, schreeuwerige zang (die mij overigens qua stemgeluid meermaals doet herinneren aan Flaming Lips-zanger Wayne Coyne). Bij de eerste beluistering schoten mij allerlei vergelijkingen door het hoofd. Noisy gitaren in de beste Sonic youth-traditie? Check. Appleseed Cast-achtige sfeerstukken? Check. Striemende gitaarpartijen vol creatieve akkoordjes in de geest van Built To Spill? Check. Stuwende posthardcore drumroffels à la The Dismemberend Plan? Check. De hectische doch vrolijke sfeer van het betere Q And Not U? Driedubbel check. En dan zit er ook nog eens geen enkele misser tussen de negen songs.

Dit bandje heeft iets wat een heleboel bands missen, noem het urgentie, 'Sturm und Drang', gedrevenheid; Believo! knalt van begin tot eind op deze debuutplaat en mag zich wat mij betreft meteen rekenen tot het beste wat onze Zuiderburen op gitaarrock-gebied te bieden heeft.
